We recently had discussions about Debian making an anti-Russian statement.
How can Debian Developers be credible about Ukraine if we don't support Palestine? DebConf decided to go to Israel, it has been pushed back until 2024 due to the pandemic but it will still happen. People asking questions about visiting Palestine during DebConf24 have been censored. Debian confirmed these people were censored.
Here we publish an email from the debian-private (leaked) gossip network. Like all able-bodied men in Israel, Lior Kaplan is obliged to join the war effort and do military service. Pillar of Defence killed at least 174 Palestinians, including children. Two Israeli servicemen and four civilians died in the same war. That is death ratio of 43 to 1.
A talented IT professional like Kaplan is probably not expected to put on a uniform and carry a gun. During the periods when he is unavailable it is more likely that professionals like Kaplan are asked to assist with signals intelligence and cyber war. The Wikipedia page about Israel's military describes the Special service routes for professionals with these skills.

CC: Ondřej Surý <ondrej@debian.org>Hi,
As rockets alerts just started in Tel Aviv, I'm not sure how available I'll be in the next couple of days.
I was dealing with http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=692613 and its meanings for wheezy... disabling JSON in PHP isn't that easy and will probably break a lot of other software.
Kaplan
Here is that picture of Kaplan with the interns from eastern Europe at DebConf18 in Taiwan:
